What She Says After

1,190 words ยท 6 min read

The silence in the Room of Requirement felt heavy, though the air was not thick with anything but the cooling sensation of her own skin. Draconia lay back against the silk cushions, her limbs heavy and trembling from the sheer exertion of the last hour. The performance she had spent years perfecting, the cleverness that usually acted as her armour, lay in ruined, damp heaps around her. She had been unmade by him, stripped of every witty retort and every sharp, haughty glance until there was nothing left but the raw, aching reality of her body. Her breathing was jagged as she stared up at the ceiling, feeling the phantom sensation of his hands and the ache in her pussy where he had filled her so thoroughly.

Harry sat on the edge of the bed, his back to her. His skin was still flushed from the friction of their bodies, and his hair was a chaotic mess from where she had gripped it. The intimacy of the moment felt dangerous, a jagged thing that could cut her if she moved too quickly. She wanted to reach out and touch the muscle of his shoulder, but the memory of her own loss of control held her hand still. She had been a mess of sounds and undignified movements, a woman who had forgotten how to be poised. It was the most terrifying thing she had ever experienced, to be seen so completely and to have no mask to hide behind.

"You look like you've been through a war," Harry said, his voice low and slightly raspy. He turned his head just enough to look at her, his eyes searching her face for the usual sharp edge.

"A war would be easier to manage than this," she replied, trying to summon a shred of her usual iron. Her voice betrayed her, wavering on the final word. She reached for a discarded silk robe to cover her breasts, wanting to feel the sensation of fabric against her skin again.

"You were different in there," he said, turning fully to face her. He didn't move to cover himself; he sat bare and unapologetic in the dim light. "You weren't playing the game. You weren't even trying to win."

Draconia felt a flicker of heat in her cheeks that had nothing to do with the warmth of the room. "I don't always need to win, Harry. It is exhausting to be perfect all the time."

"It wasn't just the perfection," he added, his gaze fixed on her eyes. "It was the way you looked at me when you thought you couldn't hide it anymore. You looked... gone."

"I was not gone," she snapped, the old habit of deflection rising up like a shield. "I was simply caught in the moment. It is a common human reaction to intense stimuli."

Harry let out a short, huffing sound that might have been a laugh. "You're lying. You're trying to make it sound like a scientific observation so you don't have to admit you actually felt something."

"I feel plenty of things," she said, sitting up and letting the robe slip slightly. "I feel the cold, the heat, and the irritation of your constant scrutiny."

"You're doing it again," he said, his voice softening. "The walls are going back up. You're building them as we speak."

The tension in the room was palpable as she watched him. For a few minutes, they sat in a precarious stillness, the aftermath of their passion lingering in the scent of their skin and the tangled sheets. She wanted to reach out and pull him back down to her, to lose herself in the sensation of his cock inside her once more, but the vulnerability of the moment was too much to bear. The high of the sex had been too high, a peak that left her feeling hollowed out and exposed.

"Why did you stop?" she asked suddenly, the question escaping before she could filter it through her intellect.

"Stop what?" Harry asked, tilting his head.

"The performance," she said, her fingers twisting the silk of her robe. "You saw the cracks. You saw the moment where the clever girl disappeared and there was just a woman who couldn't keep her composure. You saw me lose my dignity, and you looked at me like you actually cared."

"I did care," he said simply. The plainness of his statement was more jarring than a shouted insult. "I liked the part where you didn't care what you looked like. I liked the part where you weren't trying to impress me or manipulate me. It was just you."

"It was a mess," she whispered, her eyes stinging with a sudden, irrational urge to cry. "It was a loud, uncoordinated, desperate mess."

"It was the best thing that ever happened to me," he countered, moving closer to her on the bed. "Even the parts where you were losing your mind."

Draconia felt the familiar weight of her pride pressing against her chest. She wanted to tell him that he was wrong, that he was being sentimental and foolish, and that he had no right to witness her at her most undone. She wanted to push him away and re-establish the distance that had kept her safe for years. The fear of being known was a cold, sharp thing in her gut.

"You're going to make it difficult for me to walk tomorrow," she said, trying to pivot back to a more superficial observation.

"You'll survive," Harry said, his hand reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her forehead. The touch was electric, sending a jolt through her that made her breath hitch. "You're much tougher than you let on."

"I am a Malfoy," she reminded him, her chin lifting. "We are not known for being fragile."

"No, you're known for being a labyrinth," he said, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "But eventually, everyone finds the center."

"The center is a disaster," she muttered, her eyes dropping to his hand. "It is a place of zero poise and total chaos."

"It's a place where you're real," he said.

She looked up at him, the light catching the green of her eyes. The truth was a heavy thing, a stone in her throat that she had been carrying since the moment she realised she wanted him. She could feel the walls crumbling, the elaborate architecture of her personality falling into ruin under the weight of his gaze. She could not go back to the way things were before the Room of Requirement, before she had let him see the unpolished truth of her desire.

"I think you're the only person who actually knows me," she said, the words falling out of her mouth before she could stop them. The vulnerability of the sentence made her want to recoil. "And it's terrifying."

She caught herself, the panic rising in her throat as she realised how much she had revealed. She forced a small, brittle smile onto her lips, trying to reclaim the distance.

"Forget I said that," she said.

"No," he said.
